Summary

To become a dermatologist it is necessary to complete a specified program of medical training as outlined below:

University Medical Education
The initial step is to complete a medical degree registrable in Australia. For details of registration requirements for medical studies undertaken outside of Australia, contact the Australian Medical Council at www.amc.org.au.

Post-university Medical Experience
After the completion of university medical studies, at least two years (PGY1 + PGY2) acceptable training in a teaching hospital or equivalent recognised by the ACD must be completed.

Australasian College of Dermatologists Training Program
The Australasian College of Dermatologists is the only organisation accredited to train and assess dermatologists in Australia. Entry to the program is highly competitive. Once accepted to the program, trainees must complete four to five years of defined clinical and educational experience in accredited training programs and pass a series of assessments. Full details

Please note that the program is open only to registered medical practitioners who have resident status in Australia.

Application Process

Applications for admission to the training program are advertised in the News section of this website and in the medical press in January each year, for admission into the program in the following year.

Applications open at the beginning of February each year and must be submitted electronically on the College website. The closing date for receipt of applications is normally 31 March each year.

The College recognises that a National Selection Process is essential to ensure that the selection of trainees is a transparent and equitable one.
