Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an approved treatment for use on certain types of skin cancers (basal cell carcinomas) and sunspots (actinic keratoses). With this treatment a cream (Metvix cream) is applied to the lesion and left on for a few hours. Following this time, a special red light (PDT) is shone on the area of the cream application and this causes a reaction to develop which destroys the cancerous cells. This process may need to be repeated between one and four weeks after the first treatment session.
Your general practitioner will be able to refer a patient to a dermatologist if necessary, to discuss this and other treatment options for skin lesions.
